Penfolds was at the genesis of Australian viticulture, and to this day can source fruit from a diverse range of sites, including some of the nation's best and oldest. Originally created by the legendary Max Schubert, and still one of Australia's most cherished wines, Bin 389 is often referred to as the Poor man’s baby Grange, in part because components are matured with the same barrels that held the previous vintage of Grange. First made in 1960, this was the wine that helped build Penfolds solid reputation with enthusiasts of great red wine

This famous wine is a blend of Cabernet and Shiraz grown to some of the finest vineyards in Australia. Built to a satisfying and consistent styling, Bin 389 has been revered by generations of wine drinkers and continues to deliver in terms of quality. Major components this year are from Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Padthaway and Barossa. A difficult growing season with low winter temperatures and unusually high summer temperatures. The fruit ripened relatively quickly and was selectively harvested early, parcel by parcel, pursuing full flavours, structure and balance. Maturation for twelve months in a combination of new and prior use American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 14.5%

Deep, dark red, with an impenetrable core. Brooding, yet compliantly permitting noticeable oak to propel dark fruits from the glass, unveiling wafts of stewed Christmas pudding, a mix of dates / sultana / fig beneath. High notes of anise, licorice and an element of scented talc tussle with more grounded and complex savoury and cold meat aromatics. Gasping for air! Youthful, bright dark fruits hover over a base of stewed rhubarb and quince paste. Integrated oak serves to tighten the palate rather than impart any flavour, although upon sitting, coffee ground and barrel ferment nuances arise and linger. Ripe tannins and an impressive mid-palate convey Bin 389 credentials, tightly focused and compact
